How did you go from doing How did you go from doing whatever you were doing to whatever you were doing to becoming a full time becoming a full time entrepreneur? entrepreneur? How did you get into this? How did you get into this? Just kind of fell into this Just kind of fell into this digital marketing world. digital marketing world. Back in 2007, Back in 2007, I graduated from college, I graduated from college, got my degree in business got my degree in business marketing, marketing, and one of the first jobs I got and one of the first jobs I got out of school was helping a out of school was helping a company out with their company out with their digital marketing, digital marketing, which I didn't know which I didn't know much about it. much about it. They didn't really teach you They didn't really teach you that in school back in 2007. that in school back in 2007. Yep. Yep. And if they did, And if they did, it just gets outdated it just gets outdated so quickly. so quickly. So the company was new to this So the company was new to this as well and said, don't worry, as well and said, don't worry, we're going to take you to we're going to take you to workshops and classes and workshops and classes and seminars and learn with you. seminars and learn with you. And after doing that And after doing that for a few months, for a few months, just realized everyone's just realized everyone's probably going to probably going to have a website. have a website. There's lots of ways There's lots of ways to get traffic. to get traffic. Back then I was helping out Back then I was helping out with their social media, with their social media, doing paid ads, doing paid ads, doing email marketing, doing email marketing, doing SEO, doing SEO, which all works to which all works to get more traffic. get more traffic. But over the years I just But over the years I just focused more on SEO focused more on SEO because I thought, because I thought, who doesn't want free traffic? who doesn't want free traffic? SEO is just a way to SEO is just a way to get free traffic. get free traffic. And I worked at different And I worked at different advertising agencies over the advertising agencies over the years and before work and after years and before work and after work and on my lunch breaks, work and on my lunch breaks, I'd work on my own company and I'd work on my own company and eventually built that up to eventually built that up to where I was able to quit my job where I was able to quit my job and been doing this ever since, and been doing this ever since, just helping people just helping people get that traffic. get that traffic. I love that. I love that. Getting paid to learn. Getting paid to learn. And that's what I'm always And that's what I'm always telling people, like, telling people, like, if you can get paid to learn, if you can get paid to learn, like, that's huge. like, that's huge. And that's what you did. And that's what you did. You went and worked for this You went and worked for this company. You learn. company. You learn. And not just paid to learn, And not just paid to learn, paid to learn a valuable skill. paid to learn a valuable skill. Like if you're gonna get paid to Like if you're gonna get paid to learn how to dig a ditch and learn how to dig a ditch and then you dig ditches then you dig ditches for five years, for five years, like probably not the most like probably not the most lucrative opportunity. Right. lucrative opportunity. Right. But getting paid to learn how But getting paid to learn how to do digital marketing, to do digital marketing, that's golden, man. that's golden, man. If you can do that, If you can do that, that's amazing. So good. that's amazing. So good. Good for you, man. Good for you, man. Yeah, I got lucky with that. Yeah, I got lucky with that. Definitely fell into it Definitely fell into it at the right time. at the right time. And one of the first workshops And one of the first workshops that we went to was this three that we went to was this three day seminar or weekend seminar. day seminar or weekend seminar. And the people that would And the people that would speak there would say, speak there would say, I have like 10 different I have like 10 different websites. websites. I do drop shipping and affiliate I do drop shipping and affiliate marketing and all this marketing and all this other stuff. other stuff. And this is back in 2007 and the And this is back in 2007 and the company I was working company I was working for made something, for made something, a really niche product. a really niche product. They made 3D lenticular They made 3D lenticular products. products. They don't really have They don't really have too much competition. too much competition. So I realized back then that I So I realized back then that I could just try to go to could just try to go to like a local business, like a local business, restaurants or anybody that's a restaurants or anybody that's a local business and try to just local business and try to just see if they need help with SEO, see if they need help with SEO, which back in 2007, which back in 2007, nobody really understood nobody really understood what it was. what it was. Took a while for people to Took a while for people to really understand the really understand the value of SEO. value of SEO. Now people are really Now people are really understanding the value as understanding the value as the past couple of years. the past couple of years. But before that it was really But before that it was really tough just to get people to tough just to get people to understand that websites understand that websites are the future. are the future. SEO is a free traffic source. SEO is a free traffic source. And you should try to get in And you should try to get in sooner than later because the sooner than later because the older your website is, older your website is, the more trust Google is the more trust Google is going to give to you. going to give to you. Which we could talk all about Which we could talk all about that later as well. that later as well. I love it. I love it. Already diving into it. Already diving into it. So I wanted to break this down So I wanted to break this down into three different parts. into three different parts. As I've studied SEO and As I've studied SEO and as we talked to you, as we talked to you, there's kind of three different there's kind of three different categories that I came up with, categories that I came up with, but we're going to go all over, but we're going to go all over, we're going to go down rabbit we're going to go down rabbit holes. Brandon, holes. So the first category So the first category is your website. is your website. How do you optimize the How do you optimize the technical parts of your website? technical parts of your website? Number two is content. Number two is content. Creating the content and doing Creating the content and doing like the keyword research, like the keyword research, knowing what articles, knowing what articles, what kind of blogs to post, what kind of blogs to post, things to write about things to write about on your website. on your website. And number three is backlinks And number three is backlinks and how to get that backlink and how to get that backlink juice where you should focus, juice where you should focus, what matters, how it helps. what matters, how it helps. So those are the three areas So those are the three areas that we're going to that we're going to focus on today. focus on today. So let's start off with So let's start off with the first category, the first category, just general website. just general website. What's like good general website What's like good general website knowledge. What kinds of things? knowledge. What kinds of things? You went through our website and You went through our website and told us all kinds of things told us all kinds of things that we could improve, that we could improve, things that we, things that we, I don't know if we were I don't know if we were doing wrong per se, doing wrong per se, but weren't best practices. but weren't best practices. What are some of those things What are some of those things that business owners can do? that business owners can do? Because to me that's the lowest Because to me that's the lowest hanging fruit. Right. hanging fruit. Right. It's like may as well optimize It's like may as well optimize your website. your website. So Google knows what to look for So Google knows what to look for so you have the best chance of so you have the best chance of getting the most viewers. Right. getting the most viewers. Right. So I'll quit rambling. So I'll quit rambling. Go for it. Go for it. Yeah, Yeah, most people aren't doing the most people aren't doing the wrong thing with their website. wrong thing with their website. They're just not going in and They're just not going in and making the changes that making the changes that Google wants to see. Google wants to see. Because search engines, Because search engines, when they look at a website, when they look at a website, they don't see what we see. they don't see what we see. When we look at a website, When we look at a website, we see the images, the videos, we see the images, the videos, if there's podcasts, audio, if there's podcasts, audio, all that stuff. all that stuff. But search engines, But search engines, all they see is text code. all they see is text code. And basically they're just And basically they're just looking through that code for looking through that code for you to put keywords, text, you to put keywords, text, essentially the more text you essentially the more text you have on your website, have on your website, the easier it is for the search the easier it is for the search engines to read through and know engines to read through and know what that page is about. what that page is about. Because if you're just an e Because if you're just an e commerce website, for example, commerce website, for example, and you just have a bunch of and you just have a bunch of product pictures, that's good. product pictures, that's good. But Google can't really read too But Google can't really read too much with the images other much with the images other than a file name. than a file name. But other than that they But other than that they need more text. need more text. And the more text anybody puts And the more text anybody puts on a website with will help on a website with will help Google just trust or I mean read Google just trust or I mean read that page better and know that page better and know what that page is about. what that page is about. But this doesn't require any But this doesn't require any coding because it gets kind of coding because it gets kind of technical with SEO changing the technical with SEO changing the coding and putting keywords in coding and putting keywords in all these different places like all these different places like a title tag or meta description. a title tag or meta description. But the most important place But the most important place really is the content on every really is the content on every single page on your website. single page on your website. Not just the homepage, Not just the homepage, but every page that you want but every page that you want to rank needs to have text. to rank needs to have text. The more text you put The more text you put on that page, on that page, the better off you're going the better off you're going to be. Just don't hide it. to be. Just don't hide it. A lot of people will be like, A lot of people will be like, I don't want to put a bunch I don't want to put a bunch of text on my website. of text on my website. It might clutter it up. It might clutter it up. It takes away from what It takes away from what I want people to do. I want people to do. But basically you have to have But basically you have to have that balance with SEO and for that balance with SEO and for Google where or for people where Google where or for people where people don't want to people don't want to read a lot of text. read a lot of text. So if you have that text at the So if you have that text at the very bottom of your page, very bottom of your page, that's going to be better that's going to be better because people. because people. So tangent spans nowadays So tangent spans nowadays are really short. are really short. You can just have like bullet You can just have like bullet points or images or videos that points or images or videos that convey what that page is about. convey what that page is about. And then lower down that page, And then lower down that page, you can put all this text to you can put all this text to help Google better understand help Google better understand what that page is about. what that page is about. That alone will really help get That alone will really help get everybody more traffic. everybody more traffic. You just have to put on every You just have to put on every single page on your website and single page on your website and it has to be original content. it has to be original content. You can't copy it from You can't copy it from one page to another. one page to another. You have to write unique You have to write unique content for each page. content for each page. Okay, Okay, so you want as much so you want as much text as possible, text as possible, but obviously that's also but obviously that's also informative and is in align with informative and is in align with what your topic is. The thing, what your topic is. The thing, right? right? You don't want to just You don't want to just jibber jabber, right? jibber jabber, right? You want to make sure you're You want to make sure you're covering the topic. covering the topic. It's got to make sense It's got to make sense to the listener. to the listener. But what you're saying is you But what you're saying is you can put all the most valuable can put all the most valuable information up top and then you information up top and then you could add a bunch of additional could add a bunch of additional text like to further down on the text like to further down on the website. Am I hearing you right? website. Am I hearing you right? Yep. Yep. That's more for conversion That's more for conversion rate optimization. rate optimization. Because once people get Because once people get to your website, to your website, how do you keep them there to how do you keep them there to actually do what you actually do what you want them to do? want them to do? And if they just get hit with And if they just get hit with a big block of text, a big block of text, especially on mobile, especially on mobile, they're just gonna be like, they're just gonna be like, this might be a little too much. this might be a little too much. I'm gonna hit that back. I'm gonna hit that back. But I didn't find another But I didn't find another website because there's 10 other website because there's 10 other options on that first page options on that first page of Google. There's ads, of Google. There's ads, there's a lot of options. there's a lot of options. Out there for people. Out there for people. If they don't find what they're If they don't find what they're looking for right away, looking for right away, they're going to hit that back they're going to hit that back button. And the more or yeah, button. And the more or yeah, the more you're able to give to the more you're able to give to people right away in terms of people right away in terms of like a value proposition, like, like a value proposition, like, what's in it for me from what's in it for me from going to this page, going to this page, a couple bullet points, a couple bullet points, maybe a video. maybe a video. And then lower down, And then lower down, you can put all this text for you can put all this text for people that want to learn people that want to learn more and read more. more and read more. But essentially you got to But essentially you got to capture their attention capture their attention really fast. really fast. And that's where just gotta have And that's where just gotta have that balance for people and for that balance for people and for Google. Google wants that text. Google. Google wants that text. People don't want to read People don't want to read hundreds of words hundreds of words of text anymore. of text anymore. Gotcha. Gotcha. And then the more And then the more they click back, they click back, like that's an indication to like that's an indication to Google that we're not going to Google that we're not going to rank this person very high rank this person very high because they're not giving the because they're not giving the reader what they want. Correct. reader what they want. Correct. Essentially, Essentially, Google looks at user experience. Google looks at user experience. And if people search on Google, And if people search on Google, go to your website, go to your website, and then one second later they and then one second later they hit that back button and go back hit that back button and go back to Google. That tells Google, to Google. That tells Google, let's say, for example, let's say, for example, you're ranked number one you're ranked number one for that keyword. for that keyword. And Google sees that a lot of And Google sees that a lot of people that go to your people that go to your website are leaving. website are leaving. Google might drop you down to Google might drop you down to number two and move number number two and move number two to number one. two to number one. And then they're going to And then they're going to test and see, all right, test and see, all right, now that we move number now that we move number two to number one, two to number one, do people stay on the website? do people stay on the website? And if so, then great, And if so, then great, we're going to keep we're going to keep number two as now. number two as now. Now the number one position Now the number one position and move them up. and move them up. But a lot of people go that But a lot of people go that number two and still hit number two and still hit that back button. that back button. And then they're just going And then they're just going to keep going down. to keep going down. And they're always testing just And they're always testing just to see what provides the to see what provides the best user experience. best user experience. Because Google knows that it's Because Google knows that it's all about a user experience. all about a user experience. Google wants to make money, Google wants to make money, and Google only cares about and Google only cares about really making money. really making money. You clicking on ads. You clicking on ads. And the best way to keep you on And the best way to keep you on Google is by providing the Google is by providing the best search results. best search results. If you provide low quality If you provide low quality search results, search results, where people are going, where people are going, searching on Google, searching on Google, going to that website and then going to that website and then they're hitting that they're hitting that back button, back button, Google's probably not Google's probably not doing a good job. doing a good job. And you're probably eventually And you're probably eventually going to be like, going to be like, I'm going to Bing or Yahoo or I'm going to Bing or Yahoo or DuckDuckGo or some other DuckDuckGo or some other search engine. search engine. And Google doesn't want And Google doesn't want that to happen. that to happen. So they're constantly testing So they're constantly testing if everyone searches. if everyone searches. That's listening right That's listening right now to this episode. now to this episode. For the same keyword, For the same keyword, we're all going to get slightly we're all going to get slightly different results depending different results depending on your geolocation, on your geolocation, your search history. your search history. But also Google's just testing But also Google's just testing to see what gets the best user to see what gets the best user experience and what's going to experience and what's going to keep people on that keep people on that website longer. website longer. That way Google is providing That way Google is providing the best search results. the best search results. So we essentially went So we essentially went straight to content, straight to content, which I'm totally cool with. which I'm totally cool with. Like, I'm all about adapting, Like, I'm all about adapting, right? So, right? So, so let's talk more so let's talk more about content. about content. How does one determine where to How does one determine where to start with creating content for start with creating content for their website that will get their website that will get ranked and also provide value ranked and also provide value to their audience? to their audience? I would look at your I would look at your competition, competition, just see what your competitors just see what your competitors are doing. Because with SEO, are doing. Because with SEO, the nice thing about it is I the nice thing about it is I could see what you're doing, could see what you're doing, you could see what I'm doing. you could see what I'm doing. If you look in the right places. If you look in the right places. And an easy thing to do is And an easy thing to do is just go into Google, just go into Google, search for your keywords, search for your keywords, see who's on that first page of see who's on that first page of Google, skip over the ads. Google, skip over the ads. We're not going to look at We're not going to look at the ads, but just skip. the ads, but just skip. Search your keyword and look at Search your keyword and look at those 10 organic websites that those 10 organic websites that are ranked on Google. are ranked on Google. Open them all up and you can see Open them all up and you can see how much text everyone is using, how much text everyone is using, how long everyone's writing how long everyone's writing their content, their content, because it's not really because it's not really a one size fits all. a one size fits all. A lot of people said in the past A lot of people said in the past you should write 400 words of you should write 400 words of text, which is a good average. text, which is a good average. But it really depends on that But it really depends on that search. If somebody, search. If somebody, Google said, Google said, we want you to write we want you to write for the user, for the user, and if somebody's searching for and if somebody's searching for something really simple, something really simple, really basic, really basic, that doesn't need a that doesn't need a bunch of words, bunch of words, you don't need to write all you don't need to write all that extra filler content. that extra filler content. Like if someone is Like if someone is just searching, just searching, like how do you tie your shoes? like how do you tie your shoes? Basically you can only write a Basically you can only write a couple hundred words about that. couple hundred words about that. So you don't have to So you don't have to go too in depth. go too in depth. But if somebody's searching for But if somebody's searching for how to change my car engine, how to change my car engine, you could probably write a you could probably write a couple thousand words couple thousand words about that. about that. Basically you just have Basically you just have to write for the user. to write for the user. And the best way to see what And the best way to see what Google's looking for is search Google's looking for is search Google, see how much, Google, see how much, how much text your competition how much text your competition is using and kind of is using and kind of average it out. average it out. Everyone is writing Everyone is writing a thousand words. a thousand words. You should write a thousand You should write a thousand and one hundred words. and one hundred words. Try to do a little bit more Try to do a little bit more than the competition. than the competition. If everyone's writing 200 words, If everyone's writing 200 words, then you should only write then you should only write 250 or 300 words. 250 or 300 words. So just try and do a little bit So just try and do a little bit better than your competition. better than your competition. Okay, so go into Google, Okay, so go into Google, search some what you search some what you think are your key, think are your key, best keywords you have. best keywords you have. See what your see what's See what your see what's coming up essentially. coming up essentially. And those are basically the And those are basically the people you're competing with. people you're competing with. Check out why you think they're Check out why you think they're ranking or what the article, ranking or what the article, what, what post came up, what, what post came up, what article came up, what article came up, what page came up and look at what page came up and look at that and try to see how that and try to see how you can do better. you can do better. Or do you think it's a good idea Or do you think it's a good idea to maybe look at the top three to maybe look at the top three or four and get an idea of what or four and get an idea of what they're all doing and try to they're all doing and try to come up with the best parts of come up with the best parts of all of it and create your own, all of it and create your own, but make it your own but make it your own and make it better. and make it better. Is that kind of what Is that kind of what I'm hearing. I'm hearing. From you, From you, basically doing better basically doing better than the competition? than the competition? But I would look at everyone on But I would look at everyone on that first page of Google. that first page of Google. So all top 10, So all top 10, all of them look at what they're all of them look at what they're doing and just get ideas because doing and just get ideas because some of them might have a lot of some of them might have a lot of similarities where you're like, similarities where you're like, all right, all right, I have to talk about this. I have to talk about this. And then someone might talk And then someone might talk about something different where about something different where you're like maybe I should talk you're like maybe I should talk about it because it is going about it because it is going to help my audience, to help my audience, but only write for the user. but only write for the user. If you're just writing to throw If you're just writing to throw everything together, everything together, one giant article, one giant article, not going to be the best. not going to be the best. Totally write what makes sense Totally write what makes sense to you and your expertise, to you and your expertise, but also look at what other but also look at what other people are writing about because people are writing about because they'll give you an idea of what they'll give you an idea of what people are looking for, people are looking for, what Google wants, what Google wants, thinks people want. Right? thinks people want. Right? Tell me about search tools or Tell me about search tools or like keyword research tools. like keyword research tools. Do you use those? Do you use those? Do you recommend those? Do you recommend those? Which ones do you recommend? Which ones do you recommend? How would one go about using How would one go about using those to help them those to help them create content? create content? You definitely want to look You definitely want to look at search volume, at search volume, how many people search for a how many people search for a keyword? Every single Month. keyword? Every single Month. And that is where you could And that is where you could use different tools. use different tools. There's free and paid tools that There's free and paid tools that will help you do keyword will help you do keyword research and also help you come research and also help you come up with new keyword ideas. up with new keyword ideas. Because little changes Because little changes have a big impact. have a big impact. Where you could use a singular Where you could use a singular versus a plural or a synonym, versus a plural or a synonym, it's all going to get different it's all going to get different search volume. search volume. And sometimes it could be really And sometimes it could be really big discrepancies. big discrepancies.
